Searching for the Toy of the Year by the Pool
eLearningToys.com has a big job during the summer months. Finding and stocking the potential "must have" for the Christmas season. Choosing from thousands of toys takes time out of the pool.
Manchester, NH June 7, 2004 -- eLearningToys.com, based in Manchester, New Hampshire, is taking time this summer to search high and low for the toy that will be on every child's Christmas list this year. Employees are encouraged to sit and play with every toy that is found on the shelves. Parents depend on first hand knowledge when purchasing the perfect educational toy or game. Although no clear winners were found at Toy Fair 2004, there are a few solid entries. Parents are focusing on pretend play, food, and role play for girls. Boys are building, bug collecting, and searching for anything with marbles.
Several new remote controlled race tracks are making strides this year with the ability to change lanes and control movement with ease. Robotics are making a greater presences as prices come down, technology increases, and easy to follow directions.
The 10 year old girl is a big mystery for eLearningToys. Many parents are looking for something other than crafts. Their pre-teen girls get flooded with arts and crafts in pink boxes and bead kits with millions of bags and boxes. Girls want something to DO. Many of the products that are activity based are focused on boys, blue coloring, and marketing with male models. Nevertheless, eLearningToys will find the perfect item to be under every child's Christmas tree.
European toys increasingly popular with parents, but, more expensive. The higher quality and attention to detail is being appreciated by toddlers and preschoolers.
Summer will be hot and full of activity at eLearningToys. The perfect suggestion for each age group, price range, and "big gift" will be fully in place by October.

Baseball Cap Turns Fifty
By Ian Spencer
Golfers wear them and so do Brownies. Every Hollywood director since Steven Spielberg did ‘Jaws’ considers it part of their work wardrobe. It’s a US import which has become an integral part of British society. And this year it has a special birthday. The baseball cap is fifty.
Up until 1954, it was up to individual baseball players to choose a hat to keep the sun out their eyes. Some went for straw boaters, others preferred jockey caps. There was no consistency amongst players, let alone teams. So, in 1954, a hat company called New Era came up with the standard issue cap known as the ‘59Fifty’. This brought uniformity to the game and fifty years on, it’s still the official cap of Major League Baseball.
In the late 70s and early 80s the American public became interested in wearing the caps worn by their favourite team and the big names in the game. The trend took hold and the baseball cap eventually made its way into every part of American society, including Hollywood and most importantly, the music scene.
In 1994, New York film maker Spike Lee asked the cap manufacturers to make him a fitted Yankees cap in 'unofficial' colours. At first they thought it was a strange request – who’d want a cap that's not identical to the Pros? But Spike got what he wanted, people noticed, and demand for hats like his took off making Spike Lee the founder of the fitted fashion cap.
Ian Spencer of UK based cap specialists, Capitate.co.uk said “The baseball cap made its way to the UK a while ago, but the last 4 years has seen extraordinary growth, largely due to the increasing number of homes with satellite TV. Through MTV, artists like Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst helped introduce the UK to the New York Yankees cap. This was around the time when the British public were keen to show their solidarity with New York after the 9/11 tragedy.”
Baseball caps continue to grow in popularity and the music industry retains its influence over what’s hot. Usher is currently doing his bit for the Atlanta Braves while Britney fly’s the flag for the Birmingham Barons. Hats off to the baseball cap.

Preparing for your Prom Night
By ian Partridge
Preparing for Prom Night
Preparing for prom night should begin months ahead of time.
Getting a date comes first. Girls without steady boyfriends spend more time finding a date than do the boys. The best strategies involve becoming a part of a particular group and building a particular friendship with prom night in mind.
Boys and girls each have their respective areas to prepare. Sometimes it's difficult just to get the boys to rent their tuxedo, but they also need to arrange for the limousine rental, cover all costs, and make the arrangements for the night-such as a group activity or a romantic dinner before.
For girls, preparing for prom night is more intense. Make a to do list for the prom. Make another just for your hair. Select dress, jewelry, and hairstyle in that order, coordinating everything. If you need a hair stylist, begin asking for recommendations in advance. If you have one already, make a special appointment three months ahead to discuss your prom hairstyle.
Six weeks ahead, book an appointment with your stylist no less than four hours before the limo arrives. Try a complete dress rehearsal with hair, dress, and jewelry a month before your prom. Finally, on the day before collect all your essentials in one place. Does your hairdryer work? Do you need more gel?
These are the essential steps when preparing for prom night. Finally, don't forget that you and your date will exchange corsage and boutonnière. Buy it the day before, keep it refrigerated, and please try not be nervous when you pin it on.

Children with Reading Disorders
By David Fitzgerald
This learning disability is quite widespread. This disorder is known as dyslexia, and it is believe to affect as many as 8 percent the elementary school children. Reading is one of the Big R’s, an ability that is important for success in our daily lives.
As an adult you pick-up a newspaper, magazine, or any print matter and learn through reading the material something new or maybe a deeper understanding of the topic. This process of reading has become second nature to you, but as a child you had to develop certain tasks.
In your early years of life you learned to focus your attention on the printed material and in most cases taught to read it from left to right.
As you advance you learned the alphabet, and the sound of the letters. From there you jumped to the sound of words. Of course there was “Miss English” you know the type. Marking up your (what you thought) great English paper with red pencil, and always correcting your English.
But this is a process of learning to read and understand sentences. From this to reading books some good, some not so good. Your mind began building ideas and images. New ideas are compared with old and the way you look at new experiences change your way one thinks. The concepts can be deep thoughts or everyday experiences are stored in your memory.
But children with dyslexia can have problems with any of these tasks. They can have a problem separating the sounds in spoken words. Or they might be unable to simple sound out words, or maybe have trouble rhyming words.
Another problem area the children (or any person with dyslexia) have is to form images. They sometimes are unable to compare what they know with new ideas or concepts. This can become a major problem as a student moves from simple word definition to learn whole idea comprehension. Although this learning disability seems to be overwhelming, scientists have made great strides. It is important not to think your child has a learning disability, but he or she must learn their skills in a different way.
There are many Federal, National, and State organizations and associations that are able to help children with learning disabilities. I suggest contacting these services to develop the best program for your child. You will find a list of this organizations on our website. Go to our web page: www.delvebookstore.com/learning_disabilies.htm for more information.
The author does not endorse any particular education plan or course of treatment for any child. He encourage parents to consult with educators and other professionals who know the child before determining whether the child has a learning disability and if so how it should be addressed.

How To Select The Right Baby Gate.
By Kelly A. Smith
Three Steps to Selecting The Right Baby Gate:
There is no perfect baby safety gate for all situations; There are several factors to take into account when purchasing a baby gate:
1) Where is it going? If it is going at the top of a stairway, you will want to look for a hardware mounted (screwed into the wall) gate, never use a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs*. If the gate will be used to block off a room, or prevent a child from climbing up the stairs, you may be able to choose from hardware mounted and pressure mounted gates.
2) What size is the opening where the gate will go? You will need to measure the opening where your gate will go, both width of the opening, and height of the opening. Child safety gates all have specific dimensions that they will fit. You need to find a gate that will securely fit in your space. An extension kit may be necessary with some gates to fit larger areas.
3) Are there any special circumstances in the space that you need the baby gate to go? If you have a banister, molding, hollow wall, or wrought iron railing, you may need the use of a gate installation kit to create a proper mounting surface. Kits are also available to mount a baby gate to banisters without creating holes.
Using these three factors can help you make an informed decision on proper baby gates for your space. Please remember that most gates are appropriate for ages between 6 months and 3 years of age. This may be more or less for certain gates and manufacturers. As a rule of thumb, if the top of the baby gate is at or below a child's shoulder height, it is time to discontinue use of the gate.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mounting a baby gate to spaces with hollow walls, wrought iron railings, banisters & moldings/baseboards:
Gate installation kits are needed in almost all gate installations where the gate is not being mounted in a wood framed door opening. They help create a mountable surface for gates in spaces that have moldings, banisters, hollow walls, and wrought iron railings. Most gate installation kits are appropriate for hardware mounted and pressure mounted safety gates. Kits are also available to create a solid mounting surface on banisters, with no holes!
